High school classwork and general commentary on government, comparative religion, yearbook publishing, current issues and American History. This space is where you can find all the answers to the ultimate questions. Or, at least you can read and post your thoughts!
54 comments:
1 - Washington: Founding president, Credited with the victory of the American Revolution, and set the foundation of what the presidency is and does.
2 - Lincoln: Held the nation together through the secession of the South, ended slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation, and set the stage for the reconstruction rather than the punishment of the Southern states.
3 - Franklin Roosevelt: Revival of the economy after the Great Depression through the "New Deal", and his strong leadership throughout WWII (though he didn't get to see the end).
4 - Woodrow Wilson: Leadership through WWI, the League of Nations concept (United Nations foundation), Being the "voice of reason" in the development of the Treaty of Versailles.
5 - Theodore Roosevelt: Cracking down on corruption in business, preservation of American natural landmarks/wildlife (Yellowstone), and the "Big Stick" Policy.
-----
Worst - James Buchanan: Failed to intervene in the developing slavery issues developing between the North and South, leading to the Civil War. Just a poor leadership figure in almost all aspects.
Washington-true Military and Social leader, he also the standard of what a United States President should be.
Lincoln-held the union together, stood firm on the issue of the federal government, and Found his way to expanding the vision of American citizenship and held lead America another step closer to a land where all men are created equal.
FDR-led us out of the depression, birth of modern liberalism, restored faith in democracy and capitalism.
Theodore Roosevelt-he really set the stage for us to become a super power- his vision and drive made us a world power, he wanted to expand America
Reagan-economic recovery, provided the American people with confidence and pride, presidency during they Cold War, where he pressed the Soviet Union
Worst President:
Herbert Hoover-was a poor communicator and the lack of action in his presidency is considered the reasons that the depression occured
I'm going to go ahead and leave Washington and Lincoln out. They're almost at legendary God status and otherwise they'll be at the top of every list. So to be different...
1) Franklin Roosevelt: He led us out of the depression, led the beatings against the Axis Powers, and restored America's enthusiasm.
2) Theodore Roosevelt: He did what he wanted. Plus, he was the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize for help in the Russo-Japanese negotiations despite his pro-war attitude.
3) Woodrow Wilson: Led the US in WWI, set the foundations for the United Nations, and also won the Nobel Peace Prize.
4) Ronald Reagan: "My fellow Americans. I'm pleased to announce that I've signed legislation outlawing the Soviet Union. We begin bombing in five minutes." He had a sense of humor.
5) John Kennedy: He served through big Cold War dilemmas and helped us win the space race. That has to pay off at some point.
Worst President: William Taft: Did he actually do anything? I remember hearing somewhere he didn't even want to be President.
What if MacArthur had become President? Now that would have been interesting...
1. Lincoln-Continuously made tough decisions through the civil war
2. Washington-Set many precedents which are still being followed today
3. FDR-Leadership in WWII and the New Deal
4. Teddy Roosevelt-Trust busting and Panama
5. Jackson- Made tough decisions (trail of tears) and was the first non-elite president
Worst President: I'm going to agree with Tyler on this one, William Taft. He didn't really do much besides getting stuck in a bathtub.
Also, while doing some "research" online, I found this little treasure: http://www.conservativetruth.org/archives/brucewalker/02-17-02.shtml
It's a hardcore conservative view of the best presidents, and ranks W. as "at least our fifth best president"!
1. Lincoln-ended slavery throught the Emancipation Proclamation, did his best to hold the union together, and he wore the big black hats.
2. Washington-first President, set up foundation for things we follow today, has a state and district named after him.
3. FDR-got our ecomony back on track by getting us out of the depression, created the new deal, his initials are easy to remember
4. Theodore Roosevelt-stood for what he really believed in, cared about America as to preserve national parks and such, everyone loves Teddy Bears
5. Wilson-strong leader in WWI, helped with the UN, there is a brand of tennis stuff with the same last name
Worst...Assuming Bush is out of the equation...Im on the band wagon...Taft...he didn't really do anything and like Hippie says he got stuck in the bathtub...i mean dang...even I can get in and out of the tub properly and that is saying something
Most likely to sleep with someone else...Bill Clinton
Most likely to have the biggest forehead...John Adams
Most likely to still be in office tomorrow...Barack Obama
I take offense to Taft. He was a noble fat man and was hampered by the "I'm not TR" issues, much like Bush I was not Reagan. I would say with his trust busting and use of dollar diplomacy, Taft was a middle guy!
Bush at 5???? Was this the Laura Bush's site? Keep in mind this is the same group that wanted Reagan on Mt Rushmore & National Airport named after him.
He got the airport, and the Reagan building in DC---no Mt. Rushmore!
By the way, do you know whose on Rushmore?
If anything, Taft's administration brought in the 16th Amendment (Income Tax, not necessarily a good thing, but something he did...lol). He also continued Roosevelt's trust busting policies like Hoover said.
As a note, Taft might have been a so-so president, he was a very successful legal figure and was the only president appointed to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice.
1. Abraham Lincoln- Through his presidency, the Union stayed together and the north won the Civil War. He showed excellent leadership and slavery was also abolished because of what he believed in. He united the states and we wouldn’t be where we are today without him.
2. George Washington- As the first president of the United States, he did a good job. He had no one to look to or to be compared with and as the first, he set the bar pretty high. He was against the idea of the colonies thinking of him as this “monarch” figure and helped set rules and regulations that would stay with our Constitution for years and years.
3. Franklin Delano Roosevelt- He possessed leadership as he led us through the Great Depression and World War II. He set up the New Deal to help the American public and was elected for four terms. Even with his disability, it never stopped him from thinking about what was best for our country.
4. Thomas Jefferson- I know I’m probably going to get lashed for saying this but I just can’t see what was so bad about him. Yes, he invented the plow but he did more than that. What about the fact that he wrote the majority of the Declaration of Independence. How is that not an accomplishment? Plus he’s the reason why we have “the big center part” of our country. He helped gain the Louisiana Purchase and expand our nation past the Appellation Mountains. That sounds like a good president to me.
5. Theodore Roosevelt- When the American people were treated unfairly, who came to their rescue? Teddy Roosevelt, the “Trust Buster” fought the corrupt businesses and fought for our well beings. He is also responsible for establishing national parks to help preserve our wildlife from industrialization.
In my opinion how can we judge the worst president? Through every presidency we have accomplished something if not learned from our mistakes. Some of those that I believe would be near the bottom are Buchanan and Harding from what we learned from our summer work. Others are Nixon and Clinton from their scandals and another would have to be Hoover (sorry) because he didn’t do a lot to help America get through the Great Depression. However this is just my opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion.
1) Washington – Who wouldn’t agree that this founding father was among the greats? He’s on the $1 bill for goodness sake! Besides that, he was the first president, worked to gain independence for the colonies, tried to unify America, and he created the Continental Army that went on to win the American Revolution. And with all that, he was humble beyond belief, refusing to be named king.
2) Lincoln – From the start of farming in America there were slaves. Lincoln, the 16th president, was able to abolish slavery—through the Emancipation Proclamation—and established the precedent that America would provide equality to all. Even though he took quite a bit more power as president, he didn’t run with it and become an American Hitler or anything. Instead, he used his power to further American stability.
3) FDR – Now I can understand why some hard core Republicans would say that FDR’s Democratic decisions weren’t the best thing for long-term America, but it can’t be overlooked that he was able to pull the American economy from the Great Depression. His success with his New Deal programs enabled new jobs and security in financial matters.
I was going to pick Jefferson next because he is on Mt. Rushmore, but Hoover told me not to.
4) Theodore Roosevelt – He became the youngest ever president for one, but it didn’t show. He was able to increase America’s involvement in foreign affairs. Also, he was able to manage the new industrial nation like no other had done before.
5) Dwight D. Eisenhower – Basically Eisenhower success was centered on his military activism. He was the commander of the Allies during WWII and a leader of NATO. Some of his major military accomplishments were the Battle of the Bulge, the invasion of Normandy, and the Korean War. He was also an important figure in containing Communism abroad.
Overall I think that it is simply really easy for historians to say bad things about our nation’s Presidents. I feel, however that the roll of presidency—seeing as it is so high pressure—is possibly the most difficult job in the world. In fact, I don’t see why anyone would even want the position. I think that anyone who has the guts and courage to be president deserves a bit more respect from historians.
I think that the presidency being under so much scrutiny has actually caused it to become a more respect-worthy position. Back in the 1800's, it took a lot longer for news to travel than it does today. Today if the president screws up, everyone knows about it, almost immediately.
1- Washington Father of this country, turned down chance to be king. Set two term model. Hero of Revolution. First president.
2- Lincoln never gave up even when he lost a race for dog chatcher. Was a main cause of the abolishment of slavery. Pulled union back together when the south left. And had a plan to kindly re-entigrate the south.
3- Regan Fiscal republican cut goverment waste and curruption. Cut down spending over all and lowered taxs.
4- "Teddy" fought bravely in spam-am war. re-enstated executive power. He was the "trust Buster", and he was not nearly as large as Taft.
5- FDR I know being the major republican I am it pains me to do this but, He did win three consecutive terms and led us to victory in WWII at least a couple of months form it. And he did it all with polio. Got to gve credit where credit is due.
And drum roll please, the worst: James Buchanan, Yep the finest PA has to offer, kinda responsible for a little thing known as the Civil War. Ran Away after his term was up, and was unable to make up his mind on many issues while in office. The worst official PA has produced up until Gov Rendell.
I think the speed of news actually diminishes overall respect for the presidency. It seems more commonplace, and not as big. Like Hippie said, if something goes wrong people know about it right away while long-term effects aren't known until the President's out of office. More of 'Eh, (insert president name here) is on the news again. What'd he do now?'
And I'm glad 'Coffee' mentioned Eisenhower. I was thinking about putting him in my top five but he tied with Kennedy and I figured most wouldn't pick Kennedy.
What I was trying to say was that it is MUCH harder to be the president today than it was in the 1800's, all things considered.
Top 5-
1. Abraham Lincoln- He was the first Republican President. Leading the defeat of the Confederate states in American Civil War and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation (freed about 4 million slaves) places him number one. Overall, he kept the nation alive during troubled times.
2. George Washington- As the “Father of the Nation”, he led the army that defeated the British in the American Revolution. Washington administered during the formation of the National Bank and first Supreme Court judges.
3. Franklin D. Roosevelt- He steered the US out of the Depression and World War II. As the longest serving President, FDR supported a government spending program to improve the economy.
4. Thomas Jefferson- He is credited as the main author of the Declaration of Independence. He reduced the national debt and almost doubled the size of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase.
5. Dwight Eisenhower- He was a successful WWII commander. Eisenhower sent troops to enforce desegregation of schools in Little Rock. Also, creating an Interstate Highway System improved transportation.
-------
Worst-
Herbert Hoover- The economy was thriving, but in a matter of months Wall Street crashed. Global depression ensued and he was unsuccessful in passing policy proposals.
I think I'd like to chime in on the which was harder debate. Like life today, the President needs to multitask & is exposed to an intrusive public/media. The President also has MORE power, controlling a massive bureaucracy and staff to do his bidding. He also has the ability to make serious $$$ afterwards and do good. Remember, some Presidents, including Jefferson & Grant were very much at the brink of fiscal ruin. Today, W can give a speech for 400 K. As TR would say.....BULLY!
In short, I think its tougher back in the day---all of the hassle and none of the BLING! Know what I'm sayin....know what I'm sayin
1. Lincoln- He stuck up for what he believed in, which was a united nation without slavery, even though it took war.
2. Washington- He was the first president. He set the standard and many precedents for those to come.
3. Franklin Roosevelt- He took a nation broken by poverty and did everything he could to try to turn it around through his New Deal polocies. He also saw America through the tragedy at Pearl Harbor, and throug much of WWII.
4. Truman- He saw the nation through to the conclusion of WWII, and successfully gave America victory. The economy was also revived from the war effort during his presidency.
5. Theodore Roosevelt- He placed the presidency at center stage and made character as important as the issues. He accomplished trust-busting and conservationism.
The worst president, I would say is, James Buchanan because he failed to do something about the slavery issue that was evidently dividing the nation during his term as president. He was to afraid to interact in the matter, and therefore never took a firm stand on the issue. He wanted to please the people, but in reality, he got nothing accomplished through this attempt.
1. George Washington of course gets props as number one since he was president number one. He set the precedents for the presidents later to come, for example the two term idea. For some presidents, that was just two terms too many.
2.FDR was a pretty awesome president too. He was re-elected over and over and over, so he had to be doing something right. Maybe it was his numerous efforts to relieve the Great Depression or his leadership in WW2.
3. Abe Lincoln dominated because he was the guy to put an end or at least, start the end of slavery. Ending oppression always brightens a politician's reputation. He also kept the US together during the Civil War.
4. Theodore Roosevelt tried to annihilate the corrupt ends of the business world. He established many national parks for wildlife conservation. He took out the bad guys and saved animals, who wouldn't love him?
5. Woodrow Wilson. He entered the US into WW1 which eventually created the United Nations which is a good thing.
As for the worst, James Buchanan. I mean, who likes a guy who doesn't really do much when he is elected to a position of power? he also did not challenge slavery. Now, that is just lame.
1. Lincoln: he saved the union, freed the slaves (sort of), and gave great speeches that still influence how americans think about america. I escpecially like how he wanted reconciliation instead of retribution.
2. Franklin Roosevelt: Led the nation out of the great depression and through WWII. The father of modern liberalism. The new deal invested in great things and gave voice and opportunity to Zinneans.
3. Thomas Jefferson!: Visionary, architect, scientist, musician. This guy is awesome! He established a lasting democratic tradition.
4. Jimmy Carter: He restored compassion, reason, morality, and respect for human rights to foreign policy. He told americans the truth about the economy, the environment, and energy, namely the irrationality of the reckless self-centeredness that had been the national atitude toward these areas.
5. John Kennedy: Inspiring a generation of striving for a better world, including science (the moon) and civil rights.
43. Nixon: sorry, can't get over the watergate thing. despicable. Buchannan and Harding were pasively atrocious, but this man was evil.
Note: I'm rejecting the cult of Washington for being overblown. As far as military leaders go, he really only ranks about the same as Petraeus. The founding of the country was not his doing, but rather was the work of many. He is such a good national icon because he really doesn't represent anything.
I also leave out Jackson due to the Trail of Tears.
I also leave out Teddy due to his instigation of America's long standing and immoral interventionist and frankly racist foreign policy.
1.) Washington: First president who basically formed the foundation of the presidential figure and helped stabilize the country after the Revolution.
2.) Lincoln: Like most other said, he held the nation together through the Civil War and ended the use of slaves.
3.) F. Roosevelt: The New Deal, Attempting to keep us out of WWII, and being a strong leader throughout the war we tried to avoid.
4.) Reagan: Reaganomics! and his role in ending the Cold War between the U.S. and Russia.
5.) Jefferson: Yeah, the great writer of the Declaration of the Independence himself. He was a successful politician who could adapt and he was successful in developing the U.S. education system.
As for the president I see as the worst, I'd have to go with Bush. He failed to deal with national economic problems as well as started international conflict after conflict with few results to be found!
"He is such a good national icon because he really doesn't represent anything."
I don't get what you're trying to say... if he's a national icon how does he not represent anything? Sure his military prowess may not be as great as people say it is, but anyone who can garner so much support around him and still resist the temptation of power is a great man. He easily could have done what he wanted, but as others are saying, he set the precedent.
1. FDR: Great military leader, helped America through WWII and his New Deal Package
2. Clinton: Did well with foreign policy, the national debt, and had a surplus. Just because he did something immoral and lied under oath does not make him a bad president. (if you were under the same circumstances, you would try to lie too)
3. Honest Abe: Helped America stay together in his time of tribulation, and halted the south. (No the war was not about slavery, that was just a footnote)
4. Washington: Great military leader, had a smokin babe for a wife. (Just because he was first doesn't mean he was the best)
5. Andrew Jackson: You don't like it? Tough!
WORST: I'm going against the grain, for the record Bush had a really tough presidency and I guarantee most people that hate him would know how to handle that situation like he did with the whole country roaring for a war
I would have to say the worst president if Nixon. Even though he was a "gangsta" which makes him all the more interesting, not even the president is above the law, except for Andy Jacks
Here are my top 5.
1. Lincoln: Reunited the states, abolished slavery
2. Franklin Roosevelt: "New Deal" revived economy during the Great Depression, Great leader during WWII
3. Washington: Set the basis for the presidency.
4. Jackson: Reduced national debt, quelled the Nullification Crissis, made sure ALL states followed suit
5. Theodore Roosevelt: Trust buster, Gunboat diplomacy
And the "honorable mention" for the worst
Nixon: He is not a crook
1 - Lincoln: This guy was the MAN! He cracked down on slavery, kept the Union together, and did all this with people telling him how bad of a president he was.
2 - Washington: He set most of the precedents that presidents follow today. He rejected being king and he singlehandedly kept our army intact in the Revolutionary War.
3 - FDR: Although he was a die hard liberal...he did bring our country out of the Great Depression...He also did a great job in handling WWII
4 - Reagan: He also helped our economy a lot by setting precedents that we still follow somewhat today...he also helped greatly in the fall of communism in Russia.
5 - Dwight Eisenhower...too bad that the Republicans were all for setting a rule that a president can only serve two terms...because Eisenhower was probably their best candidate to run for more than two terms. He led us on the European front in WWII and he kept Communism at bay somewhat.
The worst president of all time...was Harding...He and his "hick" friends from Ohio were corrupt...and selfish spending money that wasn't there, eventually leading to the Great Depression. I believe it was because of him that we were in the Great Depression.
Phaedo has placed Jimmy Carter in the top 5.
Jimmy Carter......
Top 5........
of Presidents.........
Ever..........
I'm just sayin......Jimmy Carter....Top 5.
ROFL,
Nice job at contradicting yourself. You seem to demean Nixon and exult Clinton for being immoral...Yes their situations were different, but I just think it's interesting...
Soooo here goes...
1. Washington: he was a smart, genuine man who helped define the role of the president in our nation. He left us with the advice that we should not develop parties(which of course we didn't follow). Smart man...
2. Jackson, "old hickory" may not have been spectacular, but he was the first 'people's' president. Nothing he did(even destroying the banks) seemed to drop the public's opinion of him. We need more desicive, head-on presidents like him.
3. Eisenhower: i love this guy! first of all, he lived in PA, so he's obviously awesome. Plus, he obtained a truce in Korea, seriously lessened tension with Russia, and desegregated schools! You gotta admit he was pretty great. Who likes Ike... I like Ike!
4. Nixon: he screwed up with watergate, but if you look before that, he was a pretty decent president. The major things I liked about him were the fact that he created a broad environmental program and helped maintain stability in the world. He even got us officially out of vietnam...
5. Obama: He's in my top 5 because he hasn't done anything to screw up yet! And he's inspired America so much.
Worst: This is a tough one but I will have to go with, drumroll....
Ulysses Grant because after the Civil War was over, the American people looked to him to help them start over. He was described as being bewildered and didn't help with reform at all. Boo grant.
:D
In response to "the hippie"
Richard Nixon: Hired "goons" to break into the watergate hotel to steal important information
Clinton: Lied about having an affair.
Kennedy was a pimp and you don't see me complaining
In conclusion, I just want you to do something about it punk.
Dear ROFL: Its a BLOG, not an Andrew Jackson style call them out duel in cyberspace. Save that for a LAN party where you can exert your 6th level Thetan powers over the evil Hipster.
I would agree that there seems to be a contradiction between the Clinton scandals and Nixon--viewing one as excusable and the other not. I would have to agree that the 2 are certainly NOT at the same level. Clinton's was less a threat to the overall nation than the Imperial Presidency that RN ruled. That said, I think you put BC too high, but I can understand the pass given to him.
The fact that the W Presidency is viewed so negatively helps Clinton tremendously. He certainly was a masterful political operator. Too bad his personal morality was an albatross around his neck.
Now---play nice and NO DUELING
1. Lincoln-Greatest Pres. hands down He failed so many times, but he ends up being a great success. Yes and he's a hero. Honest Abe.
2. FDR-tough time to be president but he did excellent. New Deal.
3. Washington-Founding father.
4. Harry S. Truman-had a very tough decision to make in August of 1945, and he inherited a global mess. True man.
5. Wilson-WWI tried very hard, unlike some presidents. Woodrow.
Worst- MVB. Martin Van Buren-just terrible. He lost to William Henry Harrison in the election of 1840. That's how bad he was. He only got elected because Jackson picked him. I used to like his sideburns but not anymore. I'm sorry MVB.
Washington - boring choice, but who wouldn't put him in the top 5? As the first president, Washington left big shoes to fill. He set many precedents, including the image of the president as a democratic leader rather than a king. He was patriotic, hailed as a hero with his military victories in the American Revolution, and he wisely warned against the formation of political parties.
Lincoln - another cliché choice, but Lincoln certainly deserves a top-5 slot. Without his efforts to preserve the Union, our country could be a very different place. Directing the north against the south, Lincoln exerted more executive authority than any other president. Through the Emancipation Proclamation, he played a defining role in Black History.
FDR - I gained new respect for this president watching the movie Pearl Harbor. His willpower, after being paralyzed with polio, is enough by itself to label him as a worthy role model, but he also showed outstanding leadership during America's greatest domestic crisis (the Great Depression) and foreign crisis (WWII).
Andrew Jackson - Unlike Thomas Jefferson, who tended to adapt his policies to the current situation, Jackson stood firmly beside his ideas about government. He demonstrated a surprising amount of truth - doing & saying exactly what he intended to do without worrying about opinions. Although his actions eventually caused an economic panic, he did manage to eliminate the national debt, and his presidency was an important moment in history for the disenfranchised class.
Ronald Reagan - Known as the "Great Communicator," Reagan had an uncanny ability to connect with others because he proved himself deserving of trust. One of his great achievements was the demise of the Berlin Wall. Even though he was Republican, Democrats were known to respect him as well. Plus, he enjoyed Jelly Beans, which automatically makes him cool.
WORST...
James Buchanan - First of all, he gave PA a bad rep, which is unfortunate. As a leader, Buchanan was a scum-bag. His presidency only helped to sharpen the conflicts leading to the Civil War. The coming crisis was obvious. Frankly, he seemed scared; or perhaps he just didn't care. There's a possibility that his brain was missing. No matter the reason, Buchanan ignored his duty to help his country. His last "act" was to take no action (as a lame-duck) when South Carolina left the Union. Buchanan claimed to have “no power” – and perhaps he was right. This sad man retreated from the public into isolation shortly after leaving office.
1. Washington-He was the first. He had to set the precedent, there was no one before to show him how to be president, and he did an excellent job.
2. Lincoln-He helped our nation through a hugely important time, with the issue of slavery and the civil war.
3. FDR-Helped us get through the Great Depression, which was a terrible time for our nation.
4. Woodrow Wilson-He basically set up what would become our current United Nations, which is an insturmental part in our world today.
5. Teddy Roosevelt-I know some people already used this..but teddy bears are awesome. But he also did great things for our country; he actually cared, and tried to make the United States more well known as a "superpower."
Worst President-I'm going to say Taft just because he was so fat that he got stuck in a bathtub. Every president makes mistakes, but getting stuck in a bathtub is pretty bad. :)
Best PREZ :
1. Lincoln, for abolishing slavery and holding the union together during the most intense war up to that point in history.
2. Washington, simply for setting the fundamental precedents for presidents. (no almost-pun intended)
3. Woodrow Wilson, for his anti-imperialist motives and the fact that he helped mobilize the most efficient example of the military-industrial complex ever, during WW1. This was part of the industrial revolution which shaped America's economy and domestic life forever.
4. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, for being crucial to the regrowth of the nation and its economy during the depression. He also managed to get specific government programs implemented at home while dealing with the crippling WWII. The fact that he was also a very personal president (with his fire-side chats) and was concerned for the well being of his people, shows alot of character in a leader.
5. William Clinton, for simply presiding over an national revenue surplus (which in previous years had a been an immense debt. His ideas for health care reform (although they were blocked by congress) were innovative and, in my eyes, would have been immensely beneficial for the middle class. He was liberal ("the new democrat") and he kicked ass. (minus the whole monica lewinsky thing)
WORST PREZ:
(drumroll)
George W. Bush, for deeply involving America, alone, in a long, misguided war with hidden agendas. His inability to react to crises (911, Katrina, and economic recession) also showed terrible leadership skills. His "Patriot Act" violated citizens rights of privacy and extended the power of the executive branch past what is constitutional. Lastly, he was probably the dumbest president elected.
You may call George Bush the "dumbest" president, but remember it was America who voted him into office...
1. Washington-He set precedents for presidents of the future without being distracted by his hottttt wife.
2. Lincoln-Lincoln and his tall hat stood up against the southern secession. He preserved the union and took a stance on slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation.
3. FDR-He was president during the Great Depression which he handled well. He assisted in bringing business, agriculture, and employment back to previous levels (with new deal legislature). Although his four terms in office were a bit excessive, it may have been what America needed at such an unstable time.
4. JFK-His time in office was short but his legacy is still important in today's society. His administration worked to improve American culture, establish importance of human rights, and avoid unnecessary war. More importantly however, he still represents an important symbol of the American presidency.
5. OOOObama-He's only been in office for like five seconds, but he has already made history by becoming the first African American President. Whether his administration fails horribly, is successful, or just so-so he has already overcome a giant obstacle. Plus, he named his daughter SASHA...enough said
the WORST. William Henry Harrison-He was in office for one month when he died. He didn't accomplish ANYTHING. At least the other bad presidents accomplished failing. Plus, he left the entire country to Tyler who had trouble deciding which party he liked.. Whig today, Democrat tomorrow...
1. Washington: He's the founding president, helped with the victory of the American Revolution, and set precedents for the presidency
2.Lincoln: His work to eliminate slavery despite the impending withdrawing of the south. He stuck to his word. Honesty is the best policy.
3. FDR: helped us out of the great depression with the New Deal and his work during WWII and if he had been in office for the end of the war he probably would have successful pulled us out of that as well
4. Reagan: Reaganomics what else is there to say. Great ideas and concepts and leadership during the Cold War
5. Jefferson: contributions to the Declaration of Independence, reduced the National Debt and expanded the US territory
Worst...Taft what did he contribute to the US? He didn't even get a good scandal in.
Okay, since i have to do this....
1. Franklin D. Roosevelt - In the Midst of a depression is a hard time to take over the country. He served four terms! Planning of United Nations. We need this guy around today.
2. Woodrow Wilson- WWI, Federal Reserve Act, The Fourteen Points - International relations. He was smart and modest. AND he lived through a stroke!
3. Bill Clinton- He was a very popular president. He did away with the typical democratic "big government" view and decided to focus more on things like education, the restriction of handgun sales, and environmental stuff. plus, his first lady was one of the most active in history. and Clinton may one day be the first dude. I still say this is compensation for him cheating!!
4. John F. Kennedy - He was the first Roman Catholic President. He was also on the first televised presidential debate. He fought for civil rights. He felt that America should go back to its roots and being dedicated to human rights.
5. Theodore Roosevelt - Wanted to make the most of the executive power. More for justice than favors. All-in-all a fair guy. Won the Nobel Peace Prize (Russo-Japanese War).
And the worst president is/was
George W. Bush for trying to do what his father could not. You know all the cumulative national debt of those presidents before him? Well he doubled it in eight years. What took almost three hundred years to add up, he doubled. On What? For what? I say. But see the movie, it was wonderful.
Oh and Hoov, even if I knew who was on Mt. Rushmore, it's who's on Mt. Rushmore not whose on Mt. Rushmore. Grammar, man, grammarrrr.
Oh and that's not my real name, of course, but DUDE, i think you could figure it out.
oh and i left out washington because he was the first so even if he did screw up, people wouldn't have known or cared that much. and i left out lincoln because i pretty much just felt like bein original!
FDR- Seriously, if we were in a depression now, I would probably cry (no pun intended). (Okay the pun was intended). I think FDR devisation (sp?) of the New Deal was one of the best things America has ever had.
Washington- He was the first president, and I do think that earns him a position in the top 5. Also, he was responsible for the victory in the American Revolution.
Lincoln- The Civil War was probably one of the most famous, if not the most famous, wars in American History. Lincoln was on the winning side that didn't like slavery. And slavery is bad, so they were on the good side. And it turned out okay at the end.
George W. Bush- I really think that Bush will not be so hated in a few decades. He did not fail to react to 9/11. He did react. And who is to say that it was the wrong decision? We haven't come out of it yet. We are doing okay though.
JFK- He was assassinated and was therefore the most heroic president :') Also, he was the first Catholic president and therefore set the precedent for all our other Catholic presidents. :')
Worst president-
Gotta be Millard Fillmore. He failed to do anything for America except sign the Fugitive Slave Act. Woohoo. Plus he was always giving attention to Mexico. Sorry Millard. Even though your name almost rhymes and your first name sounds like a type of duck, you were the worst.
oh and btw this is logan cuz idk how to put my name otherwise
oh and sorry my thing is late :/
Hoover, where is your top 5?
Here it is---the best list EVER!!!!!
1. Washington: He's the gold standard & set significant standards that we follow today
a. He set the two term Presidency and walked away when he could have stayed for life
b. He established a Cabinet, which he used to get advice from a variety of source.
c. He set a moral standard of honor & integrity that the others may/may not live up to.
d. He warned the US to stay out of foreign wars.
2. Lincoln: It’s easy to say “he freed the slaves” but the reality is that he saved the UNION.
He's also the 1st Republican President.
He also is the tallest President AND
He was morally strong
3. FDR: Served the longest and served through Depression and WW II. Probably the last President considered a "god" to many Americans. The 4 Freedoms, including the Freedom from Fear and the Day that will live in Infamy speech for WW II are classic---AND he was in a wheelchair.
4. Eisenhower: His impact is great for his vision. He DID not use nukes, when he could have. He got us out of war & not into them. He backed better education & the interstates.
5. Polk: 1 term and did all he promised and then quit.
I'll post my worst at a later time.
OK---Further justification for Polk. Most people don't realize that the land gained after the Mexican War is larger than the Louisiana Purchase. Polk promised:
a. Go to War with Mexico
b. Balance the Budget
c. Take the Oregon Territory
d. Balance the Budget.
e. Leave after 1 terms, because one is enough for any man.
He even recognized that fighting England & Canada would be bad, so the 54'40" or fight slogan became--I guess we'll settle for the 49 degree parallel treaty.
Polk was Manifest destiny personified--not good to Zinn, but good for me.
The Worst:
It's easy to dog on Buchanan, Grant, Harding.... but,
I'm going with W. Lets look at the facts.
a. 9/11 is his fault--now we can make a bunch of respectable reasons why it isn't. He was at the helm
b. He wasted all the global good will after 9/11. Even the invasion of Afghanistan hasn't been completed
c. War with Iraq:a country that was unrelated to 9/11 and a destabilizing factor that made the entire Middle East less secure and cost the US over 1 trillion dollars, thousands of dead/injured and the destruction of US relations throughout the world
d. A global economic meltdown
1. Oil prices unstable
2. Housing market collapse
3. Banks collapse
4. Stock market collapse
5. Job collapse
As a complete repudiation of his policies, the GOP nominates W's main rival in 2000 and W is NOT at the GOP convention.
The winner of the election has no experience, is a non-white liberal from the Senate who campaigns on change---he's elected in a landslide....why?
People blame W for all the above & he has approval ratings lower than NIXON!
1.Washington- served as our first President and because of such set forth many important precedents and actions that were later followed by his predecessors.
2.Abraham Lincoln- saved the Union during the American Civil War. He had leadership skills during the Civil War. His actions kept the union together and eventually led to the abolition of slavery in the United States.
3.Franklin Roosevelt-He worked to end the Great Depression, including the creation and establishment of the New Deal implemented to assist America's return to international prominence.
4. Theodore Roosevelt-made an enormous impact on America being known as the "Trust Buster" when he conquered corrupt businesses.
5. Ronald Reagan-responsible for the economic recovery. He gave Americans confidence during the Cold War.
Worst-Warren G. Harding said himself "I am not fit for this office and never should have been here.” He even knew he wasn't a good president.
Oh and I have to disagree with "sashaaa." Obama would be in the top five, but like she mentioned, he named his daughter SASHA... This knocks him down out of the top 5 and into the 30's or so.
1) Washington. He was the first president and pretty much stabilized the country after the Revolution. He was and is very popular
2) Bill Clinton. During his presidency we experienced the best economic stability ever. We trully shone as the "greatest country on earth"
3) Lincoln. he held the nation together through the Civil War and ended slavery.
4) F.D.R. The New Deal. He was also a good leader throughout world war II, which he tried to avoid.
5) Jefferson. One of the major contributors towards the Declaration of Independence. He was a good politician who handled situations well was able to create an U.S. educational system.
WORST EVER! G.W. Bush. He broke the United States... and the rest of the world... Poor management skills, failed epically. Brought international conflict, worst econimoc deffecit EVER, and he looks like he's always squinting. he is also not a great public speaker, he's merely mediocre at speaking... and he gets shoes thrown at him.
1-Washington: Founding president, established a precedent for presidents to come (say that five times fast, precedent for president), crossed the Delaware River, had wooden teeth, and managed to score a hot wife. He's on the dollar bill... and I am part of the fan club of the Dollar Menu at McDonald's. Way to go, Washington!
2-Lincoln: Attempted to establish and maintain the union through the secession of the southern states, ended slavery, was really tall and wore an awesome hat. He's also the face of the modern penny. There's this old guy that comes into the grocery store that I work in that tells me all the time that pennies are going to soon be made with silver and that we should keep all our pennies, thank you very much, because soon they'll be worth a fortune, and that is the only thing that'll save us from the everlasting depression that our nation is facing. Respect your elders, people.
3-FDR: Restored the economy through his "New Deal" during the Great Depression. Has the three most famous initials in American history.
4-Reagan: Established "Reaganomics", fought against organized labor, and survived an assassination attempt. Grats, dude.
5-Wilson: Leading intellectual of the Progressive Era, established the League of Nations and helped to shape the Treaty of Versailles. Plus Juba said it, so he must be important.
Worst: Bush. Stuttered, caused unnecessary war, and described the practice of gynecology as one which allowed a "love to women". Banned gay marriage when his own daughter was homosexual. Had a forehead bigger than his own home state.
... so I was just informed that it was in fact Chaney's daughter that was gay, not Bush's. Only there was this Pink song about the president, "Dear Mr. President", that talked about his daughter being gay.
... My bad.
